  • A bristling exterior by MooseMan

I don’t have anyone in mind with this concept, though I’ve known a few people like this. I say “people” rather than “men” because there are certainly some women who have been driven to protect themselves with a bristling exterior. Strange, isn’t it, that the people who are closest to these spiny characters, are the ones who are most subjected to their spears? /

  • Life is sweet by TREVOR IRWIN

Please visit My charity website: / http://www.philadelphia33.org/ Louise is old and bowed over in pain. She walks very slowly and her eyesight is poor. As We spoke to her she shared with us little pieces of her life. The sadness, sorry and loss of all her 5 children and husband. She told us it is now so hard for her to do any work or grow food,a s her body was weak. Then as she looked into my eyes she said these words. “Life is Sweet when you walk with Jesus”. Even in her pain she loves life. She is so right, all who know Jesus will testify with Louise. Life is sweet with Jesus. 100% of all proceeds from sales from all my art, or donations made via our charity website goes towards helping the extreme poor in rural and isloated villages in Africa. • The Unexpected Gift by Helena Nelson-Reed

Watercolor on board, sold. Sometimes I paint spiritual portraits of people. Not as they appear now, but what I see within them. This is one of them. Such paintings have layers of meaning because they incorporate symbolism, archetypes and myth, which depends on the person. The person I was thinking of is middle aged but there’s something childlike about her. Sometimes this aspect is positive, like creativity, eagerness to try different mediums, and an affectionate, spontanious nature. It also means irresponsiblity, knee jerk reactions, self centered world view and a firm self serving conviction that commitments/agreements can be ignored if she changes her mind or finds them inconvienant. Realtionships are stormy because partners are attracted to the pretty child – woman exterior, yet soon lose patience because like an indulgent parent, that partner is forever doomed to sacrificing their own needs and interests while accomodating and supporting hers, and to avoid drama. This painting is a prayer she, and maybe all of us, (for dont we all have a little bit of this spoiled child inside ourselves?) find a way to nurture and intergrate a young spirit with mature behavior becoming a balanced person of integrity. Somewhere, there’s a balance. Here, the subject stands between crescent moons that both wax and wane, for she is woman between virgin and crone. The goddess statue beneath her has a medicine circle over her belly, for balance. The blackbird feathers carry the druidic associations with that bird. She gazes with fascination at a mandala of light, beacuse thats her true nature waiting to manifest. The fruits, acorns and flowers are her fertile creativity, womanhood and also represent her garden – the glass ware and beads she crafts so lovingly. This painting also portrays the goddess and her symbols are used throughout. Thus the art is also about creativity, making something out of nothing, like concieving and bearing a child…and like that child discovering the magical divine in unlikely and unexpected places. Its a way of nurturing and mohtering ourselves. A person who has a difficult life yet finds beauty and empowerment in her world despite hardship is an example. Artists bring something into being out of the void. In mythic terms we are like the creator and creatrix deities birthing worlds and suspending stars in the cold black emptiness of space, and coaxing tiny seeds into sending forth threadlike roots that in time, shatter granite and transform it into mountain ranges. The same concept applies to creative thought, when inspiration is found in unlikely places. We might release the new idea or art immediately, but more often than not continue to nurture the ‘little one’ from conception onward, gestating one phase to the next until birthing and compleation. Innovative approaches are’nt only for the arts, but processes utilized in addressing all manner of challenges. The act of creating celebrates an aspect of the divine present in everyday life; water for the soul, sustenance for the mind, and nectar for the spirit. Children are our teachers, seeing and experiencing the world for the first time. I grew up fast, and found that spending time with and raising my own sons provided an opportunity to play and laugh over silly things for no reason at all. So this painting also celebrates the many lessons of spirit that children teach. Text and imagery copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please don’t use without written permission.

  • Landscape-Yesterday by Janis Zroback

/ “Yesterday” is part of the Fall Landscape Collection...the song “Yesterday” is one of my favourites and was the inspiration for this painting….my interpretation is not a literal one, but more about the feelings that the lyrics may engender….the song is so inspiring, and as fall is drifting away from us the first thng that came to my mind was that longing for it to last a little longer…the colours I instinctively chose were a blending of the fires of autumn and the cooler blues of winter…as it’s a memory, the image has been softened…..winter has come, frost is on the branches, and we reminisce about the beautiful autumn days that are no longer here... / “Yesterday” is not for mourning, but for looking back at it’s joys, and looking forward to more…..it may be the winter of our lives or the end of a romance, but we all dream of...Yesterday... Watercolour and Gouache on Arches Paper… Yesterday, Yesterday, / Days I knew as happy sweet sequestered days. / Golden days, golden days, / Days of mad romance and love.. / Joys were mine to take, / Joys were mine to give. / Free and gaily flaming life, / was mine to live. / Sad am I, glad am I, / For today I’m dreaming of, / Yesterday..Jerome Kern For Irene Dunne fans… listen to her lovely, heartfelt, interpretation of Yesterday /

  • Plan-It Dearth: Deconstruction by Crowmanic

dearth: (1) an insufficient quantity or number (2) an acute insufficiency dearth—> death In recent times there has been an explosion in the population of the sMother Culture, the modernists who have spread as a plague across the body Earth — It-self now trapped in a grab-all, free-for-all — the cost being the imprisonment of Mother earth. Free trade, where all earth’s natural resources have become commodity, valued in $$s, including her sanctuaries, wilderness; holidays @ exorbitant prices; now all life is valued in monetary terms; “what’s It worth?”becomes the catch-cry. The Sphere of Life now more a Sphere of Fear, imprisoned; the Matrix as a cage encased in steal. What price progress?

  • Winter...Drift by Janis Zroback

/ Drift” is part of the Winter collection..this is a metaphor for not only seasons changing, but of life passing and age mourning the loss of youth…there is always so much more to say about winter than people who don’t experience it may know…no wonder the Inuit have so many different words for snow…it can be a metaphor for age and unhappiness…”now is our winter of discontent”...but a lot of good things happen in winter too…wood fires and hot chocolate among them…it is a time to slow down, reflect and take stock, and underneath it, all life is quietly waiting for the warmth of spring Watercolour on Arches Paper… I saw you as a beloved, phantom child / Beyond all years or time’s reckoning, / And would have given all that I am / To possess your eyes. / Damn time’s insolence / To enumerate all the years I never / noticed. / Now I must wonder / About the passing of years / And the counting of hours, / Wonder / If a gnarled tree / Can love Spring’s flowers J.Kavanaugh / /

  • Backlighting autumn 2 by MooseMan

The colors in the leaves really come out with the backlighting, but it’s the rim of brightness along some of the slim edges that seems to be a key to me in these shots. I’m only using a little desk lamp with a light that is somewhat blue, which adds to the effect. A couple of months ago I bought a mirror specifically to use in playing with the camera… OOH NO! ...this one is shot on some crystal-clear new ice! Yeah, way better story… ice… Oh! and moonlight, just over the horizon. Wow, I was soooooooooooo lucky to be there at just the right moment!! :) /

  • Backlighting the autumn by MooseMan

This little series comes from playing around with backlighting. The leaves I’ve chosen are not perfect or pristine… they all show the scars of their lives, and they are all beauitful, despite being in the decline of their existence here. NOT that I am getting old and, therefore, relate to them… ‘kay? /

About This Group

Introduction to the HEALING JOURNEY:

The intent of this group is to provide a forum for members to dialogue, through their art, their emotional and psychological journeys to inner feelings, conflicts, and motivations. Art becomes the path toward embracing, understanding, and releasing emotions to foster a greater sense of well being in an atmosphere where creativity can flourish.

Members are encouraged to explore the fluid nature of their chosen medium and in so doing, let go of preconceived ideas; most creative moments occur when we follow our instincts more so than our heads. Feelings enliven us, giving color and texture to our experiences. To feel the full range of emotions is akin to painting with a complete palette of colors or, using music as a metaphor, playing with all eighty-eight keys on the piano. The Latin roots of the word emotion tell the tale, i.e (our)+movere (move).

Writing and listening to music connect us with feelings that flow naturally like a river or just like a river, get dammed up. If blocked, they build up in the unconscious, blocking awareness. Eventually, repressed feelings overflow or burst out in a deluge. Mental and physical health are improved when we are involved in the expressive arts. Studies have shown that writing about one’s illness or inner life boosts immunity and restores balance and harmony in our lives. Creative expression is medicine for the soul.

Daily life, work, errands, and raising children leave little time to recapture the wonder we knew as children. The light gets dimmer, the path more obscured, until we find that we have disconnected from our inner world having watched our dreams fade into the background. The expressive arts such as photography, poetry, painting, drawing, writing, sculpting, and journaling become more necessary as we face the demands and responsibilities of adulthood. We can’t afford to lose the awe of the magical years of childhood.

In this group, we will seek to refuel the artistic process by exploring “paths” toward unlocking the creative spirit. Suggested readings will be posted in a bibliography. We will offer challenges to facilitate creative expression. Rewards or prizes will include donations to charities that support the medical problems of our members, their friends and families. Names of charities that support animal and wildlife causes will be included. The first challenge will be posted at the beginning of April.

Guidelines
In order to facilitate this interaction and self-expression, we need to have a few guidelines:

1. We encourage each member to introduce/himself in the forum including your concerns about an illness, psychological or medical, that concerns you, family or friends.
2. In order to have all art works of all members have more or less “equal” exposure, please upload a maximum of two pieces a day. This includes all forms of art, photography, poetry, writing, and journal entries.
3. To keep the quality of entries at a high standard, only upload what you consider your best work.
4. Please only include images or writing that deals with psychological or medical issues. Also include a brief description of how your artwork relates to the theme of our group. There have been some wonderful examples of artwork where members have drawn or written about their pain or represented the plight of other sentient beings with whom we share the earth. Helene Ruiz has given me permission to use her work as a good example of an artist who has drawn her pain after a severe spinal injury. Pairing your artwork with poetry and narratives is highly encouraged. A new member of redbubble and our group, faithart has given me permission to use one of her works as an example of an artist who has paired her artwork with poetry. Her oil painting “Fawn”,is a poignant painting of an endangered animal and an excellent example of integrating visual artwork with poetry.
5. Members are encouraged to keep a journal to record feelings, thoughts and dreams.

And so we begin with support, hope and encouragement to all who walk the path of the healing journey.
