...and set up a myspace account last night. Some crazy idea about promoting my art.
Does anyone else have one? Does it direct traffic to your sites? Is it a good way to network with other artists?
Or is it just a big spam fest, full of glittery ‘thanx 4 tha add’ messages?
Anyone want to be my friend? heehee

oh dear….
Tania Donald, 2 months ago
i wouldn’t recommend it. i did the same thing a while ago, not knowing anything about myspace, on the advice of a friend. let me put it this way, as a venue for promoting your art, it’s a great way to be innundated by freaky, pervy messages from sleazy creepy strangers….but that’s just my take on it…
not a single bite on the art, except from some illiterate guy whose page was covered in porn…needless to say i didn’t respond.
i find myspace really creepy…having said that i’ll friend you – but i may cancel my account soon ; )
John Robb, 2 months ago
I’m not sure if I’m your friend….. but you now are Rupert Murdoch’s lackey :-)
Vanella Mead, 2 months ago
I don’t use myspace I use facebook, but I don’t really use it to promote my art more to keep in contact with friends. I know Sam uses it for promotion.
Cornelia Togea, 2 months ago
sorry, don’t have a myspace account… but all promotion is good promotion, good luck!
Firedrake in reply to LostGod’s comment, 2 months ago
uh oh..have I unleashed hell??
Firedrake in reply to Tania Donald’s comment, 2 months ago
Hmm. Creepy, glittery and sleazy. Yikes! Probably should have posted this journal before I joined! Haha
Firedrake in reply to John Robb’s comment, 2 months ago
If Rupert Murdoch helps me sell a few paintings, I’m prepared to add him as a friend :D
LostGod, 2 months ago
if you have excess time to waste…go for it.
i joined for about 8 hours…
Firedrake in reply to LostGod’s comment, 2 months ago
Hmm, wouldn’t say I have excess time. Though…I am just about to watch Inspector Rex, so maybe I do!
Firedrake in reply to Vanella Mead’s comment, 2 months ago
Thinking about facebook too…the people on that site aren’t quite so…young? hehe

I joined ages ago then lost interest … I think the book of face has a little more life left in it! Or try stumbleupon. Nat Perkins has put together a great list of sites that are handy for promotion/social networking :)
Firedrake in reply to Cornelia Togea’s comment, 2 months ago
That’s what I’m figuring! If it all goes pear shaped I can just flag it.
LostGod, 2 months ago
lee wilde is on there, maybe she`ll throw you a couple of her 4000+ friends.
Firedrake in reply to Natalie Tyler’s comment, 2 months ago
Some people ‘stumbled upon’ me which drove heaps of traffic to my site. Good list, thanks for that!
btw, that is the funniest avatar picture you have there :D
Firedrake in reply to LostGod’s comment, 2 months ago
4000! sheesh!

For what it’s worth, your space looks good. =)

hehe, i have one…i’m never on there though…:(
Firedrake in reply to Jason Moses’s comment, 2 months ago
hehe fanks….but I can’t get the dumbassed boxes to align!
Firedrake in reply to LostGod’s comment, 2 months ago
I would have listened to it but I didn’t want to grow hair on my balls.
Damian, 2 months ago
I’ve always liked your personal site; a classy affair. I hope the MySpace thing drums up some huge sales for you though!
Firedrake in reply to Jessica Heidi Marilyn Tremp’s comment, 2 months ago
I doubt I’ll spend that much time there…certainly not as much as rb!
LostGod, 2 months ago
you wanna make money….make tees.
Carson Collins, 2 months ago
My MySpace Name is Art Ocean and, yes, I’d be honored to add you as a ‘friend’.
One of the members of the RPG, Matt Bray, also has a MySpace page, Remodernism on myspace.
I’m pretty sure he’d like to add you as a ‘friend’ as well. And I have heard rumors that art galleries are now using MySpace as a tool to search for new talent – so it may not be as silly as you seem to think it is.
Here’s the review I wrote for my links page: “Although this gargantuan free site is advertiser-driven and designed for jits looking to hook up, it has become a very popular promotion tool for musicians; artists with some knowlege of HTML may find it useful as well, as it is possible to include links and images.”
Firedrake in reply to Damian’s comment, 2 months ago
Thanks!
Ah well, if the art thing doesn’t work out, I’ll have access to all kinds of sleazy illiterate men!
Firedrake in reply to Carson Collins’s comment, 2 months ago
So far it’s been a bit of a bup-booow, but the gallery thing you just said is what I’d heard too…got to start networking I guess!
jaycee, 2 months ago
Myspace are going to have a section just for artists soon, they are working on that since at the moment its mainly for musicians and comedians. But yes its a good way to network.
Firedrake in reply to jaycee’s comment, 2 months ago
Oh reeeeally? I noticed that when I signed up last night…musicians, fimmakers and comedians are set. What about us artists!!!
Firedrake in reply to LostGod’s comment, 2 months ago
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me I should be making tees, I’d have the equivalent amount of money as if I’d sold approximately 2 tees at 30%.
LostGod, 2 months ago
wotever.
crawlspace, 2 months ago
mmmmm i have one its not that bad
unless you add strangers then it gets very weird
Firedrake in reply to crawlspace’s comment, 2 months ago
I was thinking of adopting a ‘the more the merrier’ approach…guess I’ll wait and see if I get any randoms!
shiro, 2 months ago
personally I mostly find myspace a spam fest, I don’t think it’s helped drive traffic to my site but… I’m a slacker when it comes to promoting myself so that’s probably got more to do with it! XD”
Good luck tho, and your profile page looks ace! friends you X3
WENDY BANDURSK..., 2 months ago
i have a sitemeter on my blog and added my blog to my myspace.
So i KNOW i get traffic there from my space. I use my account there mostly to stay in touch with my daughters in Melbourne (Bad Ladies) and their band Trashivory.,... so you could add them too… I admit i keep my ‘friends’ real friends or Writers and Visual Artists ….
Think wheel hub….. and myspace is just another spoke to direct traffic.
wendy
you just filter your friends slightly and you should be fine…...best of luck. :)
Shadi N. Saber, 2 months ago
LOL for some reason I thought u were a dude!
I am not really into myspace (so many fugly profiles); but I have to say yours is the coolest-looking ones I’ve seen by far.
Michael Alesich, 2 months ago
I recommend an exorcism. Maybe with a bottle of alcohol.
Looks clean and good. Nothing like most personal myspace accounts. I agree with the more the merrier approach. It can’t hurt. (And you like fur patrol? MY god. I haven’t heard them in ages.)
SabreToothFairy, 2 months ago
I have a MS page, but it won’t let me upload images of my work, so the whole ‘art marketing’ plan went a bit tits-up.
I did boost my RB sales a bit by placing an ad in their ‘for sale’ bit though…not by much, but enough to buy me a pint at the end of the month. <:)
KellyThomas, 2 months ago
I am on myspace to find out when my fav. bands are playing. And I joined especially so I could send Ween a message when they came to Oz and dean ween wrote back. well i think it was him. any way the moral of the story is I’ve only had a few freaky people want to be my friend. easy to ignore them. the spam is not bad at all. people can not give you eggs with glittery puppies in them or whatever they hell they can do on facebook. but as far as promoting art work goes, well I’ve never looked at art work on there, but good luck. AND i’ll be ya friend x
Lynsye Lowy, 2 months ago
I swore I would never have a page there! But, a friend also convinced me to get my own page to promote my art. So, I too caved in. It’s been an excellent experience for me! I’ve met some amazing artists, a mentour, and, I met someone who purchased my first art piece! It’s all in how you use it. The sleezy stuff can be easily avoided….just check the profiles of everyone that friend requests you.

ya its good for networking, but you have to add just artist and stuff, theres alot of creepness, spam, and little kids, that leave nasty messages. i have a page, but i have to take a break from the site often. i much prefer deviant art redbubble ect.
dnlddean, 2 months ago
the trouble with myspace is if you just open an ordinary account its difficult getting poeple to view it as very few poeple brows the ordinary site i have 2 on myspace one for my musi and one for art if you set up a music account i find poeple brows you get hits every day but the ordinary accounr with just my art on dosnt get any in both cases you have to work at it especialy in the begining the best way and it is a pian is to click on brows check out the different members see who is interested in art or at least who you feel would be and send them an invite but dont go cold leave a pleasent but not sugery note remember they get hundreds of invites from poeple who just want to network i did this for my music also for every ten you send out you might get one visit and somtimes thought in all i sent out i only got one you can get some nasty comments back with my music page iv had nearly 3000 hits an made a lot of friends
now i dont bother sending invites out as once you start getting reply and building friends they start inviting you the music page has about 280 friends but the art page has only had bout a 100 hits as im a musician im licky coss i have a slide show of my work with my music and all my links but dont expect to sell much from there lots of lick and i hope you prove me wrong
Birgitta, 2 months ago
it’s a great way to be innundated by freaky, pervy messages
from sleazy creepy strangers <
—-—-—--hahahaha…...I totally agree..
dnlddean, 2 months ago
after thought you can find me thier url www.myspace.com/dnlddean another good tip is when you start building friends start leaving comments on thier pages and use an interesting default picture believe it or not poeple notice your picture when leaving comments on thier friends pages and click on the default
jaycee, 2 months ago
They are changing that :)
Firedrake in reply to shiro’s comment, 2 months ago
I’m hopeful after reading Carson’s comments above….maybe I should google the best ways to promote using myspace!
Firedrake in reply to WENDY BANDURSKI-MILLER’s comment, 2 months ago
That’s great that you can measure it! I’ll be checking google analytics to see how many people come from myspace.
Firedrake in reply to Shadi N. Saber’s comment, 2 months ago
I think a few peole think that! the word ‘drake’ may be misleading :)
Fugly profiles…haha, you’re not wrong! Especially when people upload gigantic images that take a million years to load.
Firedrake in reply to Michael Alesich’s comment, 2 months ago
The power of myspace compells you!!
Firedrake in reply to SabreToothFairy’s comment, 2 months ago
Really? I just made a flash and embeded it in the ‘about me’ section.
Hey, one pint is better than no pint :)
Firedrake in reply to KellyThomas’s comment, 2 months ago
HAHA I can’t believe Dean Ween wrote to you. That is so cute. I want to be friends with Bill Hicks….do you think he’d write to me??
Yeah fuck those ridiculous gifts on facebook. If someone gave me a glittery egg I’d smash it.
Firedrake in reply to Lynsye Lowy’s comment, 2 months ago
Ah, a success story!! Fingers crossed.
Firedrake in reply to bahgoesthesheep’s comment, 2 months ago
Yeah, I’ll be keeping an eye on my comments section! Anyone rude will get the bum’s rush.
Firedrake in reply to dnlddean’s comment, 2 months ago
I’ve seen so many interesting looking artists on myspace who of course I don’t know from a bar of soap, but I guess I’ll just send out an invite and hope for the best!
WENDY BANDURSK..., 2 months ago
everyone can get a FREE SITEMETER from www.sitemeter.com
i have a premium account which just gives me more details….and for $5 a month it is soooo worth the work i put into the internet as it helps direct my time to the sites that prove their worth in either traffic or ranking on google…...
can we say. art with a science base?
can’t hurt….......
:)
Danielle Bain, 2 months ago
i’m on there, ‘elven made’. i’ve gotten a little bit of work through myspace, but really its just there until i can rope someone into helping me do a website!
good luck with it!
Janice McCafferty, 2 months ago
From long frustrating experience trying to actually sell artwork, the best way to promote your work is through actual shows and placing your website in reputable art sites. You very rarely will attract real people interested in art on MySpace, Facebook- etc. except kids and as someone said- real pervs!! And they aren’t looking for art!
tambatoys, 2 months ago
Could not ‘get into’ my space then when I kept getting spam I tried to cancel my account but it did not seem to work?? So now I get some randem spam I try to ignore lol
Firedrake in reply to tambatoys’s comment, 2 months ago
A few people have said they tried to cancel their account but couldn’t! Sounds a bit dodgy…one you sign in they own your soul!!
Firedrake in reply to WENDY BANDURSKI-MILLER’s comment, 2 months ago
Great idea, thanks!
Firedrake in reply to Janice McCafferty’s comment, 2 months ago
It has been fairly innocuous so far, no random pervs…give it time I guess!
Not art related, but I’m enjoying being able to keep up with the local bands and when they are playing!
Firedrake in reply to Danielle Bain’s comment, 2 months ago
I’m trying the triple assault of myspace, red bubble and my own site. So I should get triple the attention, right? hehe, I don’t think so :)
ekpuk, about 1 month ago
I recently joined myspace too as a friend recommended it would be good promotion. I have a group on Facebook, but i’m thinking a fan site would be better. I think its like anything – any promotion is good publicity. You should try placing a free ad in a zine or something as well or do some art for a zine/local rant as you will get good publicity there too.
Firedrake in reply to ekpuk’s comment, about 1 month ago
Conveniently my friend just launched a zine :D
Myspace has been fun so far, I have come across some unbelievable artists.
