My mate AffectMachine made a card/print in response to Seashore Sally entitled – She Being – Response to Sea Shore Sally

Seashore Sally by Karin Taylor

is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper (ink pastel acrylic charcoal)

I drew/painted this a long time ago, it was the first time i applied a real face to a painting, ie real eyes instead of dots etc. and I wasn’t very happy or confident about doing it at the time, as I had done only dots for eyes, and the lady who purchased it asked me if i could apply a face for her…after i did it, she said it reminded her very much of her sister in law, luckily…she liked her sister in law! lol

Karin Taylorcommunity helper in reply to frozenfa’s comment, 6 months ago

aw thank you fa, that’s the pastels at work…..they make everything soft-focus, lovely for working on skin tones and blending, there’s nothing more velvety and subtle….i think pastels are so much more easily controlled than paint :)

Karin Taylorcommunity helper in reply to frozenfa’s comment, 6 months ago

Hi fa…it’s been too long since we talked :(
my method is draw it first, then do the ink outlines, then colour in, using fingers to smudge and blend…then back over the top with the ink…then over the top again with the charcoal for shading….using fingers to blend, or a little soft stick thing with a pointy end….i so love playing with pastels :) oh, and i also blow on my work which i shouldn’t , as the pastel dust gets everywhere, in your lungs, up your nose, etc….should just shake it off onto a piece of paper and dispose of it….and have to use loads of spray fixative for the layers…so the layer underneath doesn’t shift, while i do subsequent layers….i often finish off with some acrylic, using it to highlight or do the finer details…particularly flowers :) xo

Karin Taylorcommunity helper in reply to Jan Landers’s comment, 6 months ago

thanx Jan, yeah..i was so pleased with my first set of eyes on this one, it set the stage for future attempts and development of faces…still developing those techniques…i look forward to getting better and better at it :)

Hey Karin this is great, love it really does convey that relaxed feeling. You are so brilliant I accidently came across your site while I was looking at sculpture, and your star one was there that you did at the seaside, and then it led to this site with your stuff on it and there was stuff I hadn’t seen before that was so cool. It seems that you do just keep getting better and better if that’s at all possible cause well I reckon your just excellent.

heheh.. i can imagine u blow off the pastel particles and it somehow land on Basil.. lolz~
it’s so interesting to hear the process, there’s so many steps! =D i suddenly wonder.. if you actually collect all the pastel dusts together in a bottle.. will it look like colorful powder bottle? hehehe.. XD
