Mark Ross in reply to Kitsmumma’s comment, 7 months ago
Thank you for your wonderful comment. I just reworked this photo last night. Wanted to give it that moody warm painterly glow like a varnish finish on canvas. I’m very glad you like it!

very dreamy, leaves you wishing you were sharing the moment with the people in the capture!
Mark Ross in reply to lifevibrations’s comment, 7 months ago
Thank you. I love the beach. It spirits you to a simple place in time, especially just after sunset or on a drizzly, misty day as was the case here.

Fantastic image Mark
Jean M. Laffitau, 4 months ago
Marvellous!!
Mark Ross in reply to rojaburbuja’s comment, 4 months ago
Not that I’m from the 1920’s but I miss the simple beauty of that era. I don’t see grace in today’s world; it seems to be missing. In almost all my work, I alter pixels to reduce the gobs of todays undesireable details, to simplify and make the resulting imagery poetic or painterly. Thanks for your lovely observation and compliment!
Mark Ross in reply to Helen Chierego’s comment, 4 months ago
Thank you! That’s a very attractive way to describe this photograph. That’s what this beach life is about, just exactly that!
Mark Ross in reply to amarica’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks Amarica. Thanks for your response. It’s so nice to see your own work appreciated. Smiles!

Deon de Waal, 4 months ago
Excellent treatment…love the tone and feel it gives it
Mark Ross in reply to Deon de Waal’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks Deon. This is a very digitally reconstructed take on the original. Glad you like it.
Deon de Waal, 4 months ago
Would love to have some idea how you do it…..i’ve tried similar things but they just look junk!
Mark Ross in reply to Deon de Waal’s comment, 4 months ago
This is the hardest kind of question to answer Deon and I’m not being evasive. This story comes to mind: After a concert performance, a man came backstage to compliment the great cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich. He said to him, “Maestro, I would give my life to play as you do,” to which Rostropovich exclaimed, “I did!” That, for me, summarizes this whole business of intense creativity. I practically live on my computer and am constantly digitally editing from within Photoshop, pushing the envelope on each and every image to be worked on. I try all the tools available and most always work them in concert until something looks good. Often, just by playing around, an idea clearly comes forth and I go with it. If it’s a good idea, it becomes part and parcel of my tool bag. That’s the general process at work. For this photograph, I must’ve used 7 or 8 different Photoshop tools and applied each one in a variety of ways. Complicated stuff with no simple answer!

love the comments you have made about your creativity.
I understand exactly what you are talking about .
wonderful image indeed
Mark Ross, 4 months ago
This whole business of sharing your work and thoughts with the artistic community is so very gratifying. I for one never realized this before. So many of us toil in obscurity and with little to no interchange with others so here on redbubble, we reverse old habits and reach out to others and in return, others reach out to us. Thank you for being there. I feel appreciated… finally. Oh yes, and thank you for your lovely remarks! Smiles!

I absolutely love this, Mark! It seems to be part illustration and part photo. Absolutely gorgeous!
Mark Ross in reply to Mel Brackstone’s comment, 4 months ago
I love the way you describe this Mel. I work in this way with most of what I do. An admixture of painting and photography. I’m happy you think well of it! That’s good news to my ears! I think your work is terrific too!

Bruce Watson, 4 months ago
The film-like graininess really adds to this. An atmospheric shot.
Mark Ross in reply to Bruce Watson’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks Bruce. That was the idea behind this. A decent original that was shot on film and PS’d til this turned up. Much better.

Mark Ross in reply to berndt2’s comment, 3 months ago
Gee, I never saw this that way before. But you know you’re right, they do look like miniatures! Hmmm, there’s an idea to consider for a future project. Thanks a million for your observations and for your compliment berndt. Smiles!

CATNIPMEOW, 3 months ago
I agree with Linda there is a feeling of timelessness- Love the lighting and textures
Your explanation of the process was awesome….I am glad I dont get that much or I would probably laugh cause I dont even remember how I did it tee hee
Mark Ross in reply to CATNIPMEOW’s comment, 3 months ago
We must be polar opposites! I embed everything that’s been done to a photograph within it’s file name, even if the work stinks! That must make me obsessive but that’s how I do “creative” things. Even cooking gets subjected to that regimen, at least whatever I did that made something taste good gets saved in my little ‘ol brain for future use. On the other side of the coin, I’m really stupid about everything else I do. Organization matters but only when it matters! Thanks for your light hearted and enjoyable comment. Smiles!

don’t know what treatment this has, but it’s great
Mark Ross in reply to Ellen’s comment, 3 months ago
How nice of you to say!
Mark Ross in reply to Squealia’s comment, 3 months ago
This would be the Afternoon Mist filter. No, I’m only kidding! The effects were done from within Photoshop and although the outcome was quite complicated to arrive at, having dismissed so many earlier attempts to get something good, in the end it turned out to be not so complicated. Does that even make any sense? Thanks for the good word.

What a wonderful photograph! When I look at it, it almost gives me the shivers. You have captured this ‘moment’ of everyday life, and yet it is so deep and meaningful. Instant fave for sure. I really wish my photography would head this direction. Do you have any tips in regards to what type of treatment you used? Of course I completely understand if you do not wish to share. Take care.
Mark Ross, 8 days ago
Well, all I can say is… Larry, you know how to pay a compliment! Thank you! Please see my reply way up above from 4 months ago to Deon de Waal’s question re: how’d you do it. I tried to answer him honestly about how I did this but I imagine it came off as kind of evasive. Most everything I work on has some real degree of experimentation, of happenstance and serendipity just to see what happens to an image or in the attempt to arrive at some idea buried in my little mind somewhere. Sometimes an attempt bears fruit, sometimes it doesn’t and sometimes it gets stored for another attempt. Well anyway, that’s my process.
