Tomatoes...

“Tomatoes” is part of the Food Collection, and the Gallery Collection

My neighbour Beatrice grows Tomatoes right here in the city amidst the Dahlias and Hydrangeas in her front garden…somehow they fit the unplanned scheme of the garden, and I love it when she donates some fresh ones for my lunch…the joy of the everyday things in life…

Acrylic on Canvas…

The street
filled with tomatoes,
midday,
summer,
light is
halved
like
a
tomato,
its juice
runs
through the streets
.

It enters at lunchtime,
takes
its ease
on countertops,
among glasses,
butter dishes,
blue saltcellars.
It sheds
its own light,
benign majesty

    4-5 tomatoes
feta cheese or fresh mozzarella cheese
    1 small onion
    black olives
    fresh basil (about 10 leaves)
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    2 tablespoons balsamico
    garlic powder
    salt and pepper
Cut tomatoes, feta or mozzarella and onions and prepare it on a dish; first tomatoes, then onions, then the cheese. Lay the basil leaves on top.
Mix the oil and balsamico with some garlic powder (or fresh garlic) and seaon to taste with salt and pepper.

Lovely painting, especially the reflective qualities of the tomatoes. As for me, slice it and put it between two pieces of bread with some mayo. Love it in the summer. Then if I want to get fancy I’ll fix a BLT.

    Wonderful image Janis.

I had two large vine grown Tom’s this morning, cooked in hot butter with a large fresh field mushroom drizzled with an aged Balsamic, seasoned with fresh dill, parsley, S and P.

how long does it take you to paint something like this?

  • Janis Zroback

Janis Zroback in reply to Laurie Puglia’s comment, 3 months ago

It is a small one, only 8×8 inches….so a week, from concept to drawing and then painting…but I work on several at a time…while layers dry, I can work on other paintings.
