eye of the ocean by Hogne
It is not how it looked in the viewfinder but it is how I wanted it to look in the end. The process of creating photographs is one with endless possibilities between the accurate recordings and significant transformations through camera settings and post processing steps. There is no "right" way to do all this and all options are available – at least for the open minded. So we choose the shutter speed, set the aperture, widen the angle or zoom in, highlight some elements, darken others, sharpen somethings, blur others, saturate and de-saturate, blend and hide,... all which change and transform the raw photo into something interesting for the eye – at times even visual art. Here I tried to create a piece of work that resembled the reality but also transcended into new visual dimensions which could not be seen by the human eye on location – merely in my mind. The long exposure and various post processing steps made this possible. The raw material was captured on Havskåren, a tiny island in the Oslofjord by the Nøtterøy archipelago. I posted this because I liked how the composition turned out. I also love the colors – muted yet warm and inviting. Earth colors. I hope you enjoy this work as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Mercury Pool by Stuart Chapman
Location: St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent, England Map: Multimap Date and Time: 27 January 2008, 7.40 a.m. Camera details: ISO 200 : f/22 : 10 seconds : 18mm : Nikon D40 : Nikon 18-55mm lens Shot narrative: / The calm stillness of the water is offset against the crashing waves against the rocks. It was a cold day and the tide was far out meaning that parts of the beach that are usually cut off by the tide were accessable and I could walk a mile or so along the beach from the car park to reach this spot. Easdale in a Storm by Alisdair Gurney
The shipping forecast had it spot on – “Malin/Hebrides, South Westerly Severe Gale force 9 increasing Storm force 10, occasionally Violent Storm force 11”. / A good day to leave the boat in the marina and go exploring by land! Easdale is a particularly exposed piece of coast on the west of Scotland, where the sea has an uninterrupted run from Nova Scotia. To give you an idea of scale, the rocks in the foreground are a metre in diameter, they aren’t pebbles. Coincidentally, this ‘beach’ is where my wife and I had our first open water scuba dives .. fortunately the sea was a little calmer then!

liquidrocks by Nathan Malinoski
An early morning photograph on the reef of Diamond Head, Oahu, Hawaii. Surfers were constantly paddling out to catch some waves on the right of this shot. I captured this as a wave receded after crashing over the reef (plus myself and my tripod). This was taken right before sunrise. This photo was taken with a Canon 5D and Sigma 12-24mm lens at f/16 and ISO 100 to ensure a low noise, sharp image. This is a two exposure blend along the horizon with selective curves to bring out the contrast and color. / © Nathan Malinoski, Sept. 2008

Half Moon Bay Sunset by Alistair Wilson
Last time I went to Half Moon Bay I got out of the car only to discover that the head on mum’s tripod that i borrowed was broken an so came away with grainy blurry horrible images. This time I went back with my new sturdy Velbon tripod and a grad filter and this is the result! HDR in Photomatix from 3 exposures, used nd4 grad and non grad filters stacked infront of eachother with cokin p series holder on wide angle lens. Unfortunately I can’t get to 10mm without catching the edge of the filter holder :( Used photoshop to remove some flare and blown out highlights as well. Shot taken with a Canon 400D and Canon wide angle 10 – 22mm lens.
