You head for Carnkie a town on the back of the castle at over 700 feet its a climb and its easy to get lost even when you see the sign! Just follow the dirt track until you hit the front door of the restaurant, there’s parking right in front. If you are smart you will pre-order a mezze for your whole table. This will allow you a speedy immersion into the cuisine of the middle east where the table is laden with treats of every description. Veggies are well catered for here many of the dishes are meat free. The area is small and this a bookings only venue so you will need to plan ahead. When you arrive the combination of the historic building , the smells of the kitchen and the sounds on the music player will guarantee you an experience unmatched anywhere else in the county. The Castle itself can be traced back to 1379. It is a stone twin towered fortress, built by the Bassett family and is inside the ramparts of the Iron Age hill fort. It was probably built has a hunting lodge, or as a chapel to St Michael. It has been restored and extended over the years, and today has the look of a modern folly, rather than a medieval fort. The views from this spot are splendid, and you can see for miles on a bright evening. Truly something different for the whole family. This shot was taken with a Canon AE1 35mm camera about 15 years ago and scanned into the computer. I found this horse while driving and decided to stop. He was every bit as cooperative as I hoped he would be standing proud in front of his property and home. Little did I know then that his mate was hiding around back or inside this little shed.

An old photo of mine (taken in 2004), reprocessed. Seeing the potential for the shot developing in front of me, I ran to catch this silhouette just at the right moment – twiddling camera settings on the hoof, not much post-processing required. Taken on the approach to Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven. Contains a primate of the species homo sapiens.

The castle pictured here was the former home of the Earl of Limerick. Designed by Edward William Godwin in the style of a fairytale castle and built in 1867 and its about 45 minutes drive from my house. / It was in need of repair but someone’s fixing it up now. / One of the owners over the years took down all the rooves to avoid paying extortionate taxes and the place has been roofless as long as I’ve known about it. There’s a modern house next to it but down the hill and out of sight of it and it was used for the 1988 film High Spirits. Copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy.
