  • Safely in Heaven
    by amarica

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I received a wonderful email this morining containing this letter. This letter inspired this work of art titled “Safely in Heaven”: THIS IS THE EMAIL I RECEIVED: i DO NOT KNOW MEREDITH OR ABBEY, BUT THIS STORY IS BEAUTIFUL This is one of the kindest things I’ve ever experienced. I have no way of knowing who sent it, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office at the Post Office. Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her. You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith. We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith,’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love. Love, / God / ___ I personally believe all animals go to Heaven…. Re 5:9: And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; Re 5:12: Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Re 5:13: And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. / ____ I created this work using a photo I had taken of my sister-in-law’s pet rottweiler named Lady. I used Photoshop CS3 to merge the images with an image a statue of Jesus from the Huntington Library and a picture of clouds from Arizona. Finally, I edited the image with Micrografx and finished the work. Digitally enhanced. Lady was such a gentle sweetheart. She became ill from lukemia and eventully succombed to her illness. The beautiful thing is that my nieces had already come to the Lord berore this. This incident brought us all closer when we were able to show our family scripture to support our belief’s about animals being created to live forever. Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. In this painting I have endeavored to reduce the landscape down to its absolute minimum, focusing purely on the line of salt-bush on the horizon, with one solitary bird hovering in the air, to give the impression of the raw empty heat of a mid day summer where nothing stirs until l the cool of the evening. . . • Sadako's Wish
    by Karin Taylor

    US$4.99–US$114.00

Sales of this Design? – 1 sale so far :) / / ‘Asia Series’ card by Karin Taylor This piece is imbued with a lot of heartfelt meaning. / Here is a painting I did in response to the story of Sadako. One day my daughter Sarah bought home a little sheet of paper with the story of Sadako on it and I was deeply moved by the tragic story of her life. You can read all about Sadako by googling her name or the story about the Thousand Paper Cranes. Just briefly though, Sadako was just a little baby when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and by the age of 11 years she had lost her fight for life due to leukaemia, as a result of the radiation from the bomb. Sadako tried hard to be cheerful and dreamed of living a long life. A little friend of hers suggested that she make 1000 paper cranes, because as legend had it, doing this could make your dreams come true. Unfortunately, Sadako died, she was only able to make 600 cranes (please see Mui-Ling Teh’s comment below for more information), but her courageous effort and fighting spirit lives on in the hearts of everyone everywhere who hears her story of hope, faith and determination. / www.sadako.org/sadakostory.htm This picture is all about Sadako being taken up into heaven at the moment of her passing from this life to the next. There are a few symbols in this painting that represent different things. The camouflage on her dress represents wartime. The wings indicate Sadako has a heavenly body now, and you can see Sadako is actually affixing them to herself as she accepts her fate. The magic carpet is taking her up to heaven. The little doll is her companion in this life and the next, similar idea to the ancient egyptians who placed belongings of the deceased with them inside the pyramids for comfort in the next life, the circles in the background represent glowing light emanating from the black stars in the sky, guiding her way to her new destination. There is an air of both sadness and triumph…leaving this world is sad, but entering the next healed and whole is triumphant. This painting won a prize at an exhibition in Tweed Heads last year.

  • Caroussel Ride
    by amarica

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I took this shot several years ago at a theme park out in Riverside, California. I have always had a fascination with caroussel horses. There are so many varieties and styles that you never seem to run out of ways to show them. I captured this one with Ilford B&W film which can be processed in any single color you want…of course I chose sepia. Then I used Photomatix to obtain an HDR image. After that, I added the Orton effect to achieve a soft dreamy result. / _______ Today’s carousels are the proud inheritors of a rich history stretching back 1,500 years. The earliest known record of a carousel device is a Byzantine etching from 500 AD which portrays riders swinging in baskets tied to a center pole (the Byzantine Empire consisted of varying parts of present day Italy, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey from 395 AD to 1453 AD). Evidence of carousel-like activities in ancient Mexico and India has also been uncovered. More about the history of the caroussel Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. • Late Night Reading
    by Ine Spee

    US$3.99–US$91.20

I remember as a kid I loved to secretly read at night, even though I was supposed to be sleeping. And as we all know, children have a very big imagination… =) A pretty simple drawing; I hope the background texture shows up, because if your monitor is set darker than mine, you might not see it at all. Did this drawing in Illustrator and Photoshop. Hope you like it! =D Also turned this into a t-shirt design.

  • Deer One
    by amarica

    US$3.99–US$91.20

A RESCUE STORY I grew up on a ranch in Southern California. When I was a little girl we found a baby deer beside the road. It had fallen off a cliff and its mother was no where to be found. We brought him home and nurtured him. We named him “Bucky” and he grew up to be a real beauty. This image is my little brother Richard feeding Bucky. My sister Carol is on the left and I am in the middle. I was about 5 years old when this picture was taken. When Bucky grew up, he dissapeared for a couple of days and we feared the worst. However, we cried so much and prayed…and God answered our prayers. Bucky was returned safely home to us. We never knew who took him or why, but we were glad to get him back. We hated to give him to the wild-life park at Hart Park outside Bakersfield, and I can still see him running back and forth inside the fence cying loudly for us to come back and get him. It broke our hearts, but he needed to be with his own…plus the law in California will not allow you to keep a wild deer (even though we had tamed him). I treated the original black & white image with hdr, PS Fractalius and Orton. I love the finished work. I hope you enjoy it. Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. • The Lost Child
    by amarica

    US$3.99–US$91.20

She could be your sister, your mother or your daughter. / For whatever reason, she puts her life on the line every day / just to make it through the night and see another morning. She is not a hero and does not even claim to be. / For reasons known only to her, she has somehow lost her way / as she stands in the light of street lamp from dusk until the dawning. She was once a little girl born with big eyes and rosebud lips. / For her something went wrong and only she can say / why she left her home and ended up here as fodder for men’s pawing. She may have been molested by a family member or a friend. / For she trusted in this person who caused her to have to run away / into the night and into a life of mere existence her spirit draining. She may not have chosen this life, it might have been chosen for her. / For she may have been shopping somewhere with someone one day / and been carried away by abductors while everyone ignored her screaming. She could have been anything her heart desired if she had had a chance. / For her that never happened and for that mischance she will ever have to pay / by selling herself for an hour or more to whomever she finds willing. She is the lost child, the one you look down on when you pass her on the street. / For she may be one to fear or maybe not when you pass her on the way / but maybe you can say a prayer for her that she may make it ‘til the morning. She might be the one to escape from a dead soul and horrible destiny. / For this child might be touched by The Master’s hand in some way, / a forgiven soul, one who’s spirit The Saviour is calling. / ______ There is nothing glamourous about this lifestyle. The intent here is not to glorify this lifestyle, but to raise public awareness so that we may be able to protect our women from abduction, abuse or whatever it is that causes them to end up here…as the lost child. / _______ / Violence against female prostitutes: Female prostitutes are at risk of violent crime, as well as possibly at higher risk of occupational mortality than any other group of women ever studied. For example, the homicide rate for female prostitutes was estimated to be 204 per 100,000 (Potterat et al, 2004), which is considerably higher than that for the next riskiest occupations in the United States during a similar period (4 per 100,000 for female liquor store workers and 29 per 100,000 for male taxicab drivers) (Castillo et al., 1994). However, there are substantial differences in rates of victimization between street prostitutes and indoor prostitutes who work as escorts, call girls, or in brothels and massage parlors (Weitzer 2000, 2005). Perpetrators include violent clients, pimps, and corrupt law-enforcement officers. Prostitutes (particularly those engaging in street prostitution are also sometimes the targets of serial killers, who may consider them easy targets, or use the religious and social stigma associated with prostitutes as justification for their murder. Being criminals in most jurisdictions, prostitutes are less likely than the law-abiding to be looked for by police if they disappear, making them favored targets of predators. Human trafficking and sexual slavery: It has been suggested that human trafficking is the fastest growing form of modern day slavery and is the third largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world. Due to the illegal and underground nature of sex trafficking, the exact extent of women and children forced into prostitution is unknown. Children are sold into the global sex trade every year. Often they are kidnapped or orphaned, and sometimes they are actually sold by their own families. According to the International Labour Organization, the problem is especially alarming in Thailand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and India. Poverty, social exclusion and war are at the heart of human trafficking. Some women are hoodwinked into believing promises of a better life, sometimes by people who are known and trusted to them. Traffickers may own legitimate travel agencies, modeling agencies and employment offices in order to gain women’s trust. Others are simply kidnapped. Once overseas it is common for their passport to be confiscated by the trafficker and to be warned of the consequences should they attempt to escape, including beatings, rape, threats of violence against their family and death threats. It is common, particularly in Eastern Europe, that should they manage to return to their families they will only be trafficked once again. • Linda Longface
    by Karin Taylor

    US$4.99–US$35.62

Linda Longface by Karin Taylor / Story and Illustration by Karin Taylor / (seeing the rose rather than the thorns) / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - Linda’s name was very appropriate because she always had a long face! Linda had a long face before breakfast because her plaits weren’t perfect! (There were whisps of hair poking out here and there). Linda had a long face at breakfast because the cereal was lumpy! Grrrrrr! (She liked it smooth). Linda had a long face after breakfast because her school uniform wasn’t perfect. Grrrrr! (She had spilt a drip of milk on her skirt). Linda had a long face at the bus stop because she was running late. Grrrrr! (And she forgot her drink bottle). Linda had a long face on the bus because she couldn’t sit down. Grrrr! (The bus was too full). Linda had a long face when the bus arrived at school because her best friend Jackie wasn’t waiting for her. Grrrr! (Jackie had the chicken pox). Linda had a long face at morning tea because she swallowed a fly. Grrrr! (The fly flew in her drink and she gulped it down). Linda had a long face during school because Henry Halliwell had to sit next to her. Grrrr! (Henry sometimes smells). Linda had a long face at lunch time because she found a tuna sandwich inside her lunch box instead of a jam sandwich. Grrrrr! (Mummy should know better!) Linda had a long face at her desk because Hugo Jeffries borrowed her black crayon and used it all up. Grrrr! (Hugo did the same thing at least twice a week!) Linda had a long face on the way home because her brother Max called her a ‘sissy’ in front of her friends. Grrrrr! (Max loved to tease Linda because of the long face she pulled). Linda had a long face after school because none of her clothes fitted properly and she thought she looked silly. Grrrrr! (Linda had 8 drawers full of clothes and a wardrobe but nothing looked right.) Linda had a long face at dinner time because Dad had cooked macaroni cheese. Grrrrr! (Linda was sure she left Mum instructions to cook sausages for tea tonight) Linda had a long face after dinner because someone had used up the last bit of toothpaste. Grrrr! (Max had the hide to blame Linda for it!) Linda had a long face at bed time because Peepers the cat was sleeping on her pillow. Grrrrr! ( Peepers was malting and his fur was everywhere!) Linda Longface was absolutely exhausted and all night long she had a long face in her dreams. Grrrrr! (She couldn’t even be happy in her sleep!) Poor Linda Longface………_if only everything were perfect_, then she could have a happy face! Every time something didn’t turn out the way she thought or hoped it would, Linda would wear her long face. But having a long face all the time was wearing Linda out. She was absolutely exhausted! All of us feel upset sometimes and this is normal, but Linda was long faced all the time! How can we help Linda to have a happy face? Okay, let’s say Linda’s having a ‘bad hair day’ for instance…..well, EVERYONE has ‘bad hair days’, but everyone that loves Linda doesn’t care if her hair is a bit messy……everyone still LOVES Linda! So that’s something to be happy about. Here’s another one, for instance, Linda had a long face at morning tea because she swallowed a fly, this upset her…….but look at it a different way, the fly TICKLED HER TUMMY when she swallowed it, so she had something funny to share at Show and Tell that afternoon! So that’s something to be happy about. We’ll try one more……Linda had a long face at bed time because Peepers the cat was sleeping on her pillow and there was fur all over it ……but look at it this way, Peepers enjoys snuggling up with Linda and likes her company AND it was a great excuse to throw on her special new pink satin pillowcase! There is more than one way to look at a problem. A problem is an opportunity to learn and discover, to grow and mature, to become a solver, not just SADDER. You don’t have to wear a long face, long faces give us tired minds and bodies… a happy face is much more fun for me, my family and everyone! Can you think of some other ways Linda could have a happy face if she tried to look at things differently? The next time you have a long face, try looking at the situation from a different point of view, look for something good about it, or a way to change it or another way to tackle it, use your imagination and wear a happy face instead. WORKSHEET Use your imagination to look at each situation differently. Think of ways you can help Linda to be happy, even though things haven’t worked out perfectly.
