  • Have just returned from a marvelous week studying fauve style painting in oils with the very talented Paul McCarthy. What a week it was! Paul is the original court jester and we had a stream of students from other classes at Grafton Artsfest wandering in to investigate the laughter emanating from our group. 50 tutors and 6 days of mayhem- gotta love that! / This still life was set up on the classroom floor, was around 1.5 metres across, and we all painted just a part of it. I always thought still life was a s boring as batshit- but WRONG!!!! / The bit that really did my head in was that the class was held in the very art room where I realised during high school that I am an artist….. 32 years ago.

  • Let The Music Play
    by Lee Wilde

    US$4.99–US$114.00

subject: I was sitting outside recently, in the backyard of my parent’s home in Melbourne…sipping beer and listening to some of my favourite 80’s tracks…....zoning out….wanting to paint but not sure what to do…you know the feeling. I know (I thought) ...I’ll paint the pool! Cool…so I’m looking at the pool and noticing the ripples across the surface of the water….the glare coming off the brick paving was almost blinding and I began imagining tiny rivulets of heat coming up from the ground and dancing around the pool. A warm breeze through the garden caused the plants to tremble….and it seemed like….everything was vibrating. There were birds chirping and crickets hiding somewhere, making that cricket sound they make. My mother’s cat, Pepper….with a full stomach..lying at my feet….pretending to sleep but watching me suspiciously with half-closed eyes. Yeah so…..it was all happenin’......sipped some more beer….the painting pretty much painted itself :-p medium: oil pastels and acrylic paint on stretched canvas size: 50cm x 70cm currently listening to: Let The Music Play by Shannon (warning: 80’s flashback…best listened to while pissed and dancing around in knickers)

I’ve just returned from a weekend up in Brisbane. It wasn’t just any weekend it was a huge turning point for me. I went to the Picasso exhibition. As I walked through the black curtain into the masters realm my pulse was racing. Standing in front of the first Picasso artwork I was so overcome with emotion tears were spilling down my cheeks. You might think that I’m exagerating, but to see the works of not only Picasso, but Braque, Ernst, Mattisse, Modigliani, Renoir, Rousseau (there were more) in the flesh was so absolutely a trip out of this world. In my early teen years I visited an exhibition of some of Picasso’s work at the Sydney Gallery and this made such an impression on me and has been a huge influence in my work. While studying design I was facinated by the artists from the turn of the century and I feel that Picasso was very instrumental in artists looking outside the square. I recommend this journey to Brisbane before the exhibition ends. Can you even try to imagine a trip into the beginnings of cubism, surrealism, fauvism, expressionism as an artist I don’t believe you can let this opportunity slip past you.

  • The images portrayed are about my gratitude for the blessings in my life. / My creativity, great family close friends and the evolving spiritual journey of my life. These areas make up the fabric, the foundation of who i am and I love that it has the overall appearance of a wonderfully coloured quilt. I have portrayed myself naked and vulnerable in all my many colours ( emotions ). Directly behind me, etched into the azure sky, are simple leaves, my need for nature.Below me, etched in red pigment..depictions of friends and family, / purposefully under me,symbolising their emotional support, love and grounding. To my right is my creativeness, light and naively colourful….also imperfect. / In the bottom right corner depicted as a simple pink-leafed gold vine / is my innerworld, spiritual and constantly evolving. / It is always there, in the corner, a graceful inner voice…guiding me through the maze of life. fauvism – information provided by wikipedia:

Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts) were a short-lived and loose grouping of early 20th century Modern artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational values retained by Impressionism. While Fauvism as a style began around 1900 and continued beyond 1910, the movement as such lasted only three years, 1905–1907, and had three exhibitions.[1]The leaders of the movement were Henri Matisse and André Derain.
