This was a spontaneous shot taken at a local Adelaide cafe on Rundle Street East in Kent Town one day when I was out with Dan. It was included in the series ‘When He’s Away’ and was a part of the ‘Living Queer in Adelaide’ group exhibition for the 2006 Feast Arts Festival there (Exibited at the Town Hall) I really like this one – human body against unyielding cement wall and rigid geometric lines. The theme that I was working on with the shots in this series was an analysis and exploration of sexuality – but more specifically gay male sexuality and the universal themes relating to the divide between public and private, acceptibility and unacceptibility, connection and disconnection, and of course human vulnerability / sensitivity and the structures and systems which confine or limit this. I’d like to thank Calvin for his time and patience as a model. I was trying for the look of a sailor washed up on the beach.

In rehearsal for the Adelaide Fringe Parade. We were a group of flaggers (www. flagmania.org) who were formed for the Gay and Lesbian Pride March in 2005. The group has evolved and will march in the Gay and Lesbian Pride March for the opening night of Feast (gay and lesbian arts festival) in November this year. The Fringe opening parade was just an opportunity to keep the magic alive.

This shot grew out of boredom but evolved into something I really like and feel strongly about – despite the multiple interpretations of bubblers – which I also love. The idea was to present a comment on the shift for those being oppressed to then becoming manipulated into mainstream and becoming the oppressors – from marginal to mainstream, from radical to conservative. The recent history of the gay and lesbian liberation movement has resulted in creating new generation ‘queers’ – turning past activists into consumers, which can hold high moral grounds, or previously less visible middle class conservative values. This shot depicts the pretentious scandal and affectations, when ‘scandal’ or shock value was often the modus operandi of the gay and lesbian liberation movement in the past.
