This shot was taken in my backyard, just as this praying mantis was passing in front of a yellow mum !

As it started to rain, I thought to myself, “if he’s sticking around, then so am I. As the rain drops started piling up on both of us, I managed to capture this pretty scene before the real deluge began !

I love this little Praying Mantis; he seemed to be very curious. / / __ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. Neither the mantis nor myself were smart enough to come out of the rain, so we just hung out together until the brief sunshower passed us by !

Here is a sharper Rain Man(tis) photo taken a few seconds later and from a slightly different angle! I like this one better than the original photo I posted yesterday.

It’s an Orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus), but I’ve used an Anthurium flower as a prop here – couldn’t find any white/light pink orchids at the local florists.

I snapped this closeup as this mantis hopped onto a cluster of colorful backyard flowers!

poor deluded pray mantis, thinks he was well camouflaged in amongst the yellow petals of a rose – better luck next time
-
Pseudempusa pinnapavonis is inconspicuous beige-yellowish in colour; only when threatened this praying mantis really shines.

It was such a strange coincidence that I stumbled across this little dude (velveteagle has informed me that it is actually a ‘dudette’) when I did. My sister captured a green one not three days ago and it was the first time I’d ever seen a praying mantis. EVER. She started telling me that there are all different kinds (like brown ones that look like sticks) and I said I didn’t believe her. Then today I was out shooting in the fields and low and behold; a weird brown mantis thing! I didn’t even know they lived around here! Just goes to show what kinds of things our eyes are open to when a suggestion is put in our heads :) © Cadence Gamache

The “all you can eat” Labor Day Weekend Buffet continues! After polishing off the Daddy Long Legs spider, the same mantis went back for seconds. Here, the mantis has just caught a Flower Fly and is polishing off some wings. Hey-Save some for dessert!!!

Creepy little praying mantis. Liked the flash though.

This little ?mantis? was less than 5cm long and clung to the roof of my car for all five minutes it took to drive home and take some photos of it. I love the subtlety of the reflection – the paint on the car roof is by no means in perfect condition, but I think it kind of adds to the effect… and of course ‘reflection’ has a double meaning when added to a meditative-looking praying figure. The Black’n’White conversion was necessary because the Red of the roof and the Yellow/Black of the insect simply didn’t work together for the theme

This is Einstein the Praying Mantis, he was a 2nd grade class pet. The children were having a hard time finding crickets to feed him so they asked if I would like to take him home. They requested that I take a bunch of pictures of him too. I have tons ! I hope it makes them happy. These are very interesting insects, they are almost like pets. They follow you around by turning their faces toward you and they like to crawl out of their little home and onto your hand. I let him out to hang out on some indoor flowers while I’m cleaning his cage.

The Bob Mantis is an awful beast. It selects its victims, much like a female mantis choosing a partner. It promises a life of bliss, freedom and prosperity, then promptly chomps off the head of its new mate. The screams of the victims go unanswered by the world, which answers. “Yes, it is horrible, but that’s nature, what can you do?”

I found this guy in my flower bed when pulling the weeds. / /
