  • Medicine Feather
    by Helena Nelson-Reed

    US$4.16–US$95.00

Colored Pencils on Paper. The eagle is sacred in Native America and treated with reverence. It must never touch the ground. Should one fall by accident, even during a pow wow, the dance stops and there’s a special ceremony for retrieving it, carried out by a select group of men. This eagle feather was a gift from a hunka, a Lakota term for a form of adopted relative. This brother, of the Onieda Nation, danced his 10th Sundance last year. The entire 4 days he held this feather in one of his hands, and gave it to me afterward to represent the bond between us. I asted and danced support during this time behind him, in the arbor. After receiving it, and arriving home I’d placed it in a wide flat basket with prayer ties, the cottom cloth in 4 directions colors, a new sweetgrass braid and fresh Black Hills sage. It was so powerful with beautiful memories of that summer that I took the basket into my studio and drew it. The aroma of sweetgrass and fresh sage was in the air, sometimes I’d pull off a few leaves and crush them between my fingers, inhaling its scent. When I do this, so many strong memories flood back, along with good feelings. Later I burnt the ties, sending the prayers to the four directions. I hope that looking at it brings some of this energy to you, too.

  • Watercolor on watercolor board, sold. / This painting is based on a traditional Lakota men’s medicine society for those who’ve expereinced a dream or had a vision indicating they’ve a specific type of elk medicine. I don’t know if it exists anymore, but the archetype and energy certainly does, as many of us women can attest to. There two kinds of elk medicine. One is positive, embodying the qualities of leadership, caring for one’s mate and protecting the community, knowing when to speak, when to hold one’s tongue. Then there’s the darker aspect . A person may be one or the other, but not both. This painting depicts the shadow aspect . Elk spirits (the same as deer spirits) in this tradition manifest as charismatic humans of both genders. Those who dream of them are Elk Dreamers(ED). Mortals possessing elk medicine exercise the sexual power over the opposite gender as elk during the rut. Elk spirits and dreamers speak quietly and move silently along the outskirts of camp, trails, and in lonely places. Here I’ve painted the inner self of an ED, without his handsome form. The rectangle over the heart is a window into the spirit realms, for he travels dimensions at will. It also symbolizes the mirror ED’s used in society dances to flash at and thus capture/ possess the hearts and souls of female observers. ED’s prefer inexpereinced women, so girls and single young women were always kept away from their dances. An elk spirit, just like female deer spirits, is cleverly disguised as a human right down to the feet. Only hoof prints left in soft earth will betray their true form to those who know the signs. The slender strands connecting elk to the environment are ties to the land and the primal. An elk spirit shapeshifts and morphs into or out of the brush just like the wild animal, symbolized by tiny stylized flowers in the background and landscape flowing over his form. The tiny horizontal hourglass shapes are butterflies portrayed as depicted in old beadwork and ledger art. Butterfly, kimamah, is sometimes associated with elk medicine. The mask – like visage is the way I envision a elk spirit beneath the pleasing image he or she displays to the human world. Its based on gnarled tree stumps, roots, the human skull and twisted face masks found in many indigenous cultures. From his belt dangle the dried out shells of victims from whom he’s sucked the life energy, leaving them hollow. Women willingly give themselves to him, despite the warnings of others and their own better judgement. The ED consumes them as a spider sucks life energy from a butterfly (ED’s are connected with spider) leaving them heartbroken, lethargic, depressed, weak and disoriented. He can do nothing else, for this is his nature. In the background shadowy spirit elk dance across the land, reminding us of his powers and where they come from. The elk leaping from the main subject represents the act of intentionally luring a potential victim away from the camp circle and into the unknown. The spider web spread across the antlers is a metaphor for mitakuye oyasin, Lakota for “We are all Connected (or related)” for ES’s have a place in the great hoop. The shadow aspect of elk and all other dark energies are part of life, just as Light is. The web also symbolizes his ability to snare and trap souls, and affiliation with Iktomi (spider), the trickster. Don’t play games with elk spirits, for you’ll always lose….your heart. • Today 4th November 2008 we commentate one of the saddest episodes of our history, men, women, and children were taken from their land, herded into makeshift forts with minimal facilities and food, then forced to march a thousand miles(Some made part of the trip by boat in equally horrible conditions). Under the generally indifferent army commanders, human losses for the first groups of Cherokee removed were extremely high. John Ross made an urgent appeal to Scott, requesting that the general let his people lead the tribe west. General Scott agreed. Ross organized the Cherokee into smaller groups and let them move separately through the wilderness so they could forage for food. Although the parties under Ross left in early fall and arrived in Oklahoma during the brutal winter of 1838-39, he significantly reduced the loss of life among his people. About 4000 Cherokee died as a result of the removal. The route they traversed and the journey itself became known as “The Trail of Tears” or, as a direct translation from Cherokee, “The Trail Where They Cried” (“Nunna daul Tsuny”). The Beginning Of The Trail – By TKroseverar – And – Coppertrees I would like to add a special thank you to Tammy – For Naming Each Of The 13 paintings I have uploaded to commemorate this day. Please let us take a moment today to reflect on these events and together start a healing process to bond our futures. If you can start the day without caffeine, / If you can get going without pep pills, / If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, / If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, / If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it, / If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, / If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, / If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him, / If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend, / If you can conquer tension without medical help, / If you can relax without liquor, / If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, / Then you are probably the family dog!!!!!!

  • MEDICINE LAKE
    by Sandy Stewart

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Medicine Lake, Alberta is just 27 km (16 miles) southeast of the town of Jasper and it depends on what time of year you visit, as to whether it is even there or not! During early summer the lake is 9 km (5.5 miles) long, 1 km (.62 miles) wide and 30 metres (100ft) deep. Every fall it mysteriously drains naturally like a giant bathtub with a missing plug. First Nation’s people originally called it Magic Lake. Wolves in the region have figured out how to make it work for them and have been known to chase caribou into the muck so they’ll get stuck. Where does all the water go? / The answer is, “out the bottom”, like a bathtub without a plug. The Maligne River pours into the lake from the south and drains out through sinkholes in the bottom. The water then streams through a cave system formed in the slightly soluble limestone rock, surfacing again in the area of Maligne Canyon 16 kilometers downstream. This is one of the largest known sinking rivers in the Western Hemisphere and may be the largest inaccessible cave system anywhere in the world! Summer melt water coming into the lake exceeds the capacity of the sinkholes to drain it. Decreased melt water in the late summer and fall means that the lake’s sinkholes can drain the lake faster then the Maligne River can fill it. This creates the disappearing lake phenomena. Aboriginal peoples called the lake Medicine because of its seemingly magical powers, and the United Nations created the Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site partly because of this unique drainage system. Medicine Lake is located on the road to the spectacularily scenic Maligne Lake. This is a great road route for spotting wildlife, from elk and moose to grizzly and black bear. You can self-drive or tour.
