It was March 2005, somewhere near St Kilda....

It was March 2005, somewhere near St Kilda. I was sitting in a room, on a sofa propped on milk crates, staring at the ceiling. Around my neck was a Philadelphia collar and in my hand was a bottle of gin. The collar was the only sign that I had recently broken my C1, 2 & T1 the gin was to stop me thinking about it. I was staring at the ceiling because it was reasonably tricky to stare anywhere else. I sat quietly contemplating my future. Next to me was a chap called Christopher Lansell, Crispy to his comrades, whom I’d known about 8 minutes. He started talking about some things, wild, imaginative things, I started to reply, and back he came with more, this went on quite successfully for a while. One of these crazy things was an idea he’d been playing with to install a 1:1 billion scale model of the Solar System somewhere in Melbourne. It seemed quite a good idea to me. Almost without any warning at all it was 9am on December 10 of that year, my return ticket to the UK forgotten in the back of a drawer somewhere, and 6 months out of date, my neck visible to all who cared to glance. I’m crouched at the door to our St Kilda studio, attempting to drill a hole into Pluto, except this Pluto is only 2mm in diametre, which makes it very tricky. And in half an hour it’s meant to be on a plinth somewhere near Port Melbourne. / / / / Building the Sun Having drummed up some media interest through an interview on ABC radio and an article in The Age and spent a few months constructing the Sun and nine planets by hand we were actually within minutes of taking our disjointed conversation live. / / / / / Painting the Planets / Planet bases Pluto / Mars / Neptune / Saturn / Jupiter / Having finally secured Pluto to it’s stand, we threw all the models in the back of a trailer and hightailed it to the beach, as we roared along the approach to the marina there was a sudden, and slightly sickening crunch. Crispy braked, we looked at each other in silent fear, then out through the back window of the Toyota. Rolling down the road in the vague direction of Acland Street was a 1.39m golden ball of plywood and satin. Hmmm. We exited the car at speed and, to the amusement of the residents, sprinted off after the star. It was not entirely unscathed, but it was still presentable, and anyway, we were out of time. The weekend was long and disgustingly hot, but the model was a success, large numbers of families turned up on their bikes, with their children, The Age article folded in their pockets, planning to ride the full 6km route to Pluto. And being mid summer the beach and passing traffic was plentiful. Seeing kids stand under the 1.28cm hand painted sphere that was Earth (I even managed to dust the Himalayas with some snow) and point out Australia before running 150m to the Sun and smacking it with their ice cream stained hands was quite rewarding. / Earth, a man with a beard & the Moon, which is as far as Man has ever actually travelled, allegedly. (But not the man with the beard, he may have been no further than Geelong, I don’t know) Mars / The Sun / / / By Sunday night we were knackered but content. Then things started getting interesting. Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet rang us up, said he’d heard about the project but had been out of the country and wondered if he could come and see the models, we, unsurprisingly said yes. Then the council rang us up and said they’d had a lot of calls from the general public asking when they were going to do the project again. They said they hadn’t done it in the first place. It was about this point that words like ‘permanent’ began to appear in conversations. We found a sculptor, Cameron Robbins, an eccentric and extremely talented man based in Collingwood, and commenced talks with the council. It was estimated at costing around $70,000, and so the tedious process of money raising became the focus, Tony pledged a large sum of his personal finances, as did some universities. Things looked good. Then the university pulled out, and we experienced our first wedge of bureaucratic council red tape. Things look bad. And that high and low was a microcosm of how it progressed for the next two years. With a hefty focus on the ‘This is just never going to happen’ line of thought. But now, three years and six months after a conversation on a sofa in St Kilda, there are some people down at the foreshore tidying up the metre high bluestone plinths the planets rest on, and no doubt someone polishing the 360kg of bronze that makes up the Sun, in preparation for the opening on September 21. And I’m going to miss it, because I’m in London, so if you have nothing better to do please pop down to the reserve north of the Marina at 4.45, take some photos, get yourself an epic sense of how fragile and unique Earth really is and give Crispy some support for the endless phone calls and meetings and rolls and rolls of tape he’s deftly sliced through. Pouring the bronze Planets / Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, Uranus cooling off / Half of the Sun / All of the Sun / Polishing the Sun / The sculptor Cameron Robbins next to polished Sun / Saturn / Venus, Mars, Earth, Mercury & Pluto (yeah it’s not a planet anymore, but it was then) / Pouring concrete base for the Sun / Diamond saw cutting bluestone plinths for the planets / Plinths being lifted into place / / The Sun being moved into place / / / / Model Location / And if you ever see anyone chasing an enormous shining sphere down a road, go and give them a hand.

    Karin’s Jewellery Shop !http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/karinlouisetaylor/Jour…

Karin’s Jewellery Shop / Beach Shed Chick Giclee Resin Disc / / Displayed in packaging / A Selection of chokers from the collection Some of you may already know, I’ve been selling my necklaces at etsy I sell my collectible hand cast 4cm round resin disc necklaces, with mini prints of original artworks over there Lovely little jewellery pieces, hand strung on cotton cord with a natural bead. Artfully packaged in transparent display dome with designer label. The make great gifts. Necklaces are made from tiny giclee (geeclay) prints of my original paintings. They are embedded in a pebble like resin discs which have been handcast and set by myself in the studio. In the original paintings I’ve used a number of different media, including inks, pastels, acrylics, charcoal and other bits and pieces on paper impressed with a canvas texture, this gives each piece an unusual grainy appearance adding to the ambience. The inspiration for each piece takes time and it is a long process from the original painting to the art to wear pieces you see here on Etsy. Each one is imbued with love and affection. I hope you like my jewellery, thank you so much for looking :) Below are the paintings which are currently available as giclee necklaces, it is unlikely that i’ll be creating any more jewellery in the future, as they are extremely time consuming, and I’m getting back into my painting more and more these days, but i do hope you enjoy looking at my collection of what is currently available…To see Karin’s Jewellery at her Etsy Store – Click here See them all at my Etsy Shop

  • / Heymae and Ben / Above is an image that Matt Mawson took of Heymae (iAN’s poodle) and my son Ben at our picnic, and Matt has made this into a gorgeous vector!! Ben’s saving for a poster of this to put up in his room…!!!! but ijust bought him the poster, as couldn’t wait ….. it’ll look great in his room!! Here is a photo Matt took of iAN and mwa, with our new book!! We had a really really special day yesterday meeting fellow Red Bubble friends for the first time. A picnic day was organised at the beachside town of Kingscliff, a halfway mark for us all…. Meeting iAN Derrick who authored our book She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore was just so special. iAN has a really wicked sense of humour, but underneath all that is a real sweetie, a big softie!! iAN’s lovely daughter was so generous inviting us to ‘picnic’ at her place, a lovely spot with a real beachhouse feel… i will model my future home on her place i reckon!! She made us feel so welcome, and had lots of funny stories to share with us all!! a great host!!! ..and then to add to this, we met the lovely Matt and Sandra, Bob their young friend and author of a book about raising blue-tongue lizards, and stars of the show BLUEY the blue tongue lizard who i got to cuddle and pat and HEYMAE, iAN’s sweet little (supposedly ferocious) black poodle.. lol lovelier folks you could not meet, it’s always a bit scary to meet people for the first time, especially after you’ve been chatting to them online, coz you wonder what the heck they’ll think of you in person, but this meeting has just made me appreciate each one of them so much more, and realise them as very real and special people, it felt like visiting with family. My son Ben came along and had the time of his life, he enjoyed all the banter and a lovely book given to him by iAN by Terry Pratchett… I got iAN to autograph all my books which i later gave to my folks and my sister and her children. Here are some pics from the big day!! / The Marvelous Matt, the Enigmatic iAN, and Krazy Kaz…. three bubblees meeting for the very first time… another case of the internet bringing people together in real life, I’ll never forget this day, it was so special! / Young Bob and Bluey the blue-tongue lizard who came to visit us too.. Bob autographed my copy of the terrific book he wrote on how to keep and raise blue tongue lizards and we had an awesome chat!!! / My Dad John and myself, together with the wonderful vector Matt created for us of Polkadot Snake / Dad was so thrilled to get this mounted print, he raced off this morning and showed it and the book to his best fishing mate and his wife, and they were most impressed too!!! / My little sis Melissa (Missy) who’s 7 years my junior but a heck of a lot taller than me, and her kids (my nieces) Indi (Indiana Ruby) and Maya (the little one) with an autographed copy of our new book She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore / which everyone loves! / Heymae (iAN’s beautiful black poodle) A very happy day was had by all!! / Thanx for looking !!

Mahalo a nui loa to the hosts for featuring my image in The True Beauty Group This beautiful mele is one of my favourites and I love the gentle power of his angelic voice!! It is the beautiful Maunaleo Mele Keali’i composed for his beloved Mother, Lei, and the one I included on my signature image I created with deepest respect and appreciation for Keali’i Reichel From my collection: Darkly, deeply, beautifully blue! Maunaleo ~ Journey With Spirit This is one of my signature pieces, a composite of seven of my images blended into one using photographs I have taken on the lava seacliffs of Wa’ianapanapa Maui Hawai’i layered with a full moon in Fairbanks Alaska. Maunaleo ~ Journey With Spirit is dedicated with deepest respect and appreciation for Keali’i Reichel. Carleton Lewis Keali’inaniaimokuokalani Reichel (born 1962) popularly known as Keali’i Reichel, is a popular and bestselling singer, songwriter, choreographer, dancer, chanter, scholar, teacher, and personality from the State of Hawai’i. He has spent his life educating the world about Hawaiian culture through music and dance. Maunaleo is one of his most beautiful songs and one of my favourites! / Lyrics Source: Keali`i Reichel album “Melelana” Copyright 1999 Punahele, Inc. – “Composed for Keali`i’s mother Lei, she is compared to the majestic sentinel mountain, Maunaleo, who guards, comforts, nourishes and loves her people. MIGALOOMAGIC is my new concept gallery at Red Bubble…below are the very first offerings!...

MIGALOOMAGIC is my new concept gallery at Red Bubble…below are the very first offerings! My Definition of Magic / Adjective – Wonderful, amazing or incredible, ie as in ‘a magic moment’ I think it’s very important to define magic, as for some people this is a stumbling block and something that conjures up images of black magic, darkness, and other practices which i don’t subscribe to… for the record I’m a christian who doesn’t head to sunday services each week, although i have spent most of my life doing that, it’s not where I am at this stage of the journey….and I’m not a perfect one by any means, I’m quite an unusual one by christian standards, and many feel i don’t meet the standards, but that’s ok…God and I are like this :D we’re tight, so it doesn’t matter what others think on that score…and I guess it’s unusual for me to use the word ‘magic’ when ‘magic practices’ are forbidden in the bible… but it is the where I am coming from that matters to God…He knows I don’t mean it in that way…so already, i apologise to any who may find it offensive or inconsistent, but I intend to keep the name as to me it only implies magic in this case as “wonderful, amazing or incredible, as in a magic moment”. / migaloo-pink-magic / / migaloo-blue-magic / migaloo-in-antarctica / little-lost-orca / rainbow-orcas / little-lost-orca tshirt / Moo Cow Sunrise / Little Moo I’ve been busy with a new concept…. / I wanted to bring parents something special to help them connect with their children… / I am busy creating a series of digital wall art, especially for children…for their bedrooms. My new gallery on Red Bubble is called migaloomagic / So far, I have created six conceptual pieces of art over there….but I am excited to show you anyway!! This is a gallery which I hope will provide gifts for children, for their bedrooms, for their birthdays…...I hope that it will bring parents closer to their children by helping them remember to tell their children stories, you know – the old fashioned kind of stories….the ones you just make up on the spot….. When the kids say….’tell us a story mum/dad/aunty/uncle/guardian/carer” i hope that you as a parent will gain an inspirational thought or two, from glancing up on the wall and seeing these whales or some other little idea from my artwork…to help you along :D Hugs to all, / Karin :D

The sky and sea are matching shades of grey, like a two-piece suit. A line that is about a metre in height of orangey-pink sky stretches for an equal distance to either side. / Three separate sunrays come down to hit the sea; one in the middle, one to the left, and one to the right. / Sunset is eagerly anticipated once again. The waiting is almost too much, yet we must wait if we wish to be a witness to this daily transformation of nature from day to night. / It is not long before the bottom of the sun pokes out beneath the cloud, like a cheeky child poking its tongue out. / With the gait similar to an elderly person, it moves slowly, shuffling downwards towards the sea. / Another minute passes, and half the sun is in full view. It continues moving slowly downwards until the entire thing is visible – a big, round orange ball of fire. For a brief moment it looks like a face. / I never thought of the sun having a face before, as it is not usually seen in this light, unlike the moon. / The sky turns redder, as if from embarrassment. The sun does not stop moving; now it drops into the sea. I can almost see it edging downwards, with the jagged edge consistent of something that is moving slowly. / As each level of the sun descents below the sea, the backdrop changes colour, like a chameleon. / Exit stage left – sunset is now completed. It’s such a simple yet beautiful occurrence. / A drop in the ocean, really.
