  • The Ancient Wisdom of the Sea by Helena Nelson-Reed

If asked to assign the ocean a gender, I’d say ‘female’. The moon’s effect on tides and menses is one recognized by peoples from ancient times. Historically, myth and folklore always link women with the sea. Primordial seas gave birth to life forms that later adapted to dry land and took to the air. Like a wise woman, the oceans have seen much, but yield their secrets to a chosen few. Whether peaceful or stormy on the surface, always there are unplumbed depths waiting to be discovered. If you dont respect her, be on your guard. I visited Yellowknife, in Canada’s NT last year and the year before, and there became acquainted for the first time with the arctic ecology. This was an attempt to personify the way I relate to the ocean and its many life forms, energies, and undiscovered secrets. The wise woman’s face is taken from the sketch used used in another painting, ‘Morning Star” that appears on RedBubble. The swirling motifs are a vortex of somewhat stylised sea creatures found in arctic waters. The jewel at center is the living soul of the sea, beyond gender or description.
